Subfuel Tank Low Fuel Indicator Circuit Troubleshooting

Subfuel tank Low fuel indicator does not come on
  1. Turn the ignition switch to ON (II).
Does the subfuel tank low fuel indicator flash?
YES -
Go to Step 3 .
NO -
Substitute a known-good gauge control module, and recheck. If the subfuel tank low fuel indicator circuit is OK, replace the original gauge control module.
  1. Turn the ignition switch to LOCK (0).
  1. Connect fuel indicator unit 5P connector terminal No. 2 to body ground with a jumper wire.
  1. Turn the ignition switch to ON (II).
  1. Check the subfuel tank low fuel indicator.
Is the subfuel tank low fuel indicator indicated?
YES -
Go to Step 7 .
NO -
Go to Step 12 .
  1. Turn the ignition switch to LOCK (0).
  1. Disconnect the fuel indicator unit 5P connector.
  1. Turn the ignition switch to ON (II).

  1. Measure the voltage between fuel indicator unit 5P connector terminal No. 1 and body ground.
Is there battery voltage?
YES -
Go to Step 11 .
NO -
Repair open in the wire between the fuel indicator unit and the No. 22 METER (7.5 A) fuse in the under-dash fuse/relay box.■

  1. Measure the voltage between fuel indicator unit 5P connector terminals No. 1 and No. 5.
Is there battery voltage?
YES -
Replace the fuel indicator unit .■
NO -
  1. Turn the ignition switch to LOCK (0).

  1. Connect gauge control module 32P connector terminal No. 15 to body ground with a jumper wire.
  1. Turn the ignition switch to ON (II).
  1. Check the subfuel tank low fuel indicator.
Is the subfuel tank low fuel indicator indicated?
YES -
Repair open in the wire between the fuel indicator unit and the gauge control module.■
NO -

Subfuel Tank Low Fuel Indicator stays on with enough fuel
  1. Turn the ignition switch to LOCK (0).
  1. Turn the ignition switch to ON (II), and watch the subfuel tank low fuel indicator.
Does the subfuel tank low fuel indicator stay on for more than 2 seconds after turning the ignition switch to ON (II)?
YES -
Go to Step 17 .
NO -
Go to Step 3 .
  1. Measure the voltage between fuel indicator unit 5P connector terminal No. 4 and body ground.
Is there battery voltage?
YES -
Go to Step 4 .
NO -
Replace the fuel indicator unit.
  1. Turn the ignition switch to LOCK (0).

  1. Disconnect the fuel subharness 4P connector (A) from the dashboard wire harness.
  1. Turn the ignition switch to ON (II).

  1. Measure the voltage between dashboard wire harness 4P connector terminal No. 4 and body ground.
Is there battery voltage?
YES -
Go to Step 9 .
NO -
Repair open in the wire between the fuel indicator unit (sensor out line) and the fuel subharness.■

  1. Measure the voltage between dashboard wire harness 4P connector terminals No. 3 and No. 4.
Is there battery voltage?
YES -
Go to Step 10 .
NO -
Repair open in the wire between the fuel indicator unit (sensor in line) and the fuel subharness.■
  1. Turn the ignition switch to LOCK (0).
  1. Reconnect the fuel subharness 4P connector to the dashboard wire harness.
  1. Turn the ignition switch to ON (II).

  1. Measure the voltage between subfuel pump 4P connector terminal No. 3 and body ground.
Is there battery voltage?
YES -
Go to Step 16 .
NO -
Repair open in the wire between the dashboard wire harness (sensor out line) and the subfuel pump.■

  1. Measure the voltage between subfuel pump 4P connector terminals No. 1 and No. 3.
Is there battery voltage?
YES -
NO -
Repair open in the wire between the fuel subharness (sensor in line) and the subfuel pump.■
  1. Turn the ignition switch to LOCK (0).
  1. Disconnect the fuel indicator unit 5P connector.
  1. Turn the ignition switch to ON (II), and watch the subfuel tank low fuel indicator.
Does the subfuel tank low fuel indicator stay on for more than 2 seconds after turning the ignition switch to ON (II)?
YES -
Repair short in the wire between the fuel indicator unit and the gauge control module.■
NO -
Go to Step 20 .
  1. Turn the ignition switch to LOCK (0).

  1. Disconnect the fuel subharness 4P connector (A) from the dashboard wire harness.

  1. Check for continuity between dashboard wire harness 4P connector terminal No. 4 and body ground.
Is there continuity?
YES -
Repair short in the wire between the fuel indicator unit (sensor out line) and the fuel subharness.■
NO -
Go to Step 24 .

  1. Check for continuity between subfuel pump 4P connector terminal No. 3 and body ground.
Is there continuity?
YES -
Repair short in the wire between the dashboard wire harness (sensor out line) and the subfuel pump.■
NO -
Replace the fuel indicator unit .■
